Since joining us in the summer of 2015, John has become a cherished part of our Livingston family, giving generously of his time, talents, and energy to support our mission and those we serve.
–
Early on, John met Randy Churchill, a beloved figure in the Camarillo community, who quickly became both a mentor and a friend. Randy showed John that philanthropy is about showing up, giving of yourself, and sharing what you can. John took this lesson to heart and has embodied it ever since.
–
Through his connections with fellow volunteers, John found his way to the Camarillo Farmers Market. He especially credits Ruff Smith, longtime manager of the market, as a true inspiration. Her dedication to the market and trust in his leadership encouraged him to step up in new ways. She often placed new volunteers under his wing, and John delighted in guiding them, just as others had once done for him.
–
When asked what keeps him coming back, John doesn’t point to his own efforts. Instead, he talks about the people, the genuinely kind and committed individuals he has had the privilege of working alongside. Even though our interview was focused on him, he redirected the spotlight toward those who inspired and supported him, a humility that speaks volumes about his character.
–
Some of John’s fondest memories at the market are also his most playful. Having grown up in West Virginia, he often requested that the song “Country Roads” be played while the market bustled with music, laughter, and community. And one especially memorable day, John grinned from ear to ear as he asked a musician to play “Centerfield” by John Fogerty. That moment was pure joy, as John was brimming with the same love of baseball that carried him to 57 major league ballparks.
–
John feels grateful for his role at Livingston, and Livingston is just as grateful to him. His steady leadership, kindness, and wholehearted presence have strengthened our organization and touched countless lives. Thank you, John, for bringing heart into everything you do.

PDF Version

This month, we are proud to honor John McCoy as Livingston’s Volunteer of the Month.
